Not quite southern: The precarious allegiance of the Natchez Nabobs in the sectional crisis
Article Abstract:
The planters of the antebellum South that affected the destiny of the nation and wielded enormous political power at all levels of government are discussed. The Natchez nabobs never quite became southerners and they elected to remain loyal to the land of their heritage when the long-smoldering sectional conflict erupted into open warfare in 1860s.

Bridging the Mississippi: the railroads and steamboats clash at the rock island bridge
Article Abstract:
The citizens of Rock Island, Illinois, and Davenport Iowa, cheered as the first railroad bridge across the Mississippi was open for business on April 22,1856. The construction and completion of the bridge came to symbolize the larger issues affecting transcontinental commerce and sectional interests.
