On the way to a post-familial family: from a community of need to elective affinities
Article Abstract:
The family is not disappearing but is changing form as a result of a trend toward individualization and elective relationships rather than relationships based on need. The traditional family no longer has a monopoly on social relationships. The new form of the family, taken in a broad sense to cover many unconventional forms, could be termed a 'post-familial family.' Holding the family together now takes much more effort, requiring a staging of daily life.
