Overseas R&D and the strategic evolution of MNEs: evidence from laboratories in the UK
Article Abstract:
The increase in the number of decentralized R&D units in multinational corporations is a primary element in the effort of such firms to reform their global strategies to improve their chances for success in an increasingly competitive global market. There are two increasingly significant strategies for overseas R&D units. One involves the development of new products or very distinctive product variants. Another strategy involves decentralized laboratories to take certain positions in international programs and perform specialized parts of basic research that indicate specific areas of expertise within the host-country.

Why are Japanese firms so innovative in engineering technology?
Article Abstract:
Japanese leadership in innovative commercial products is a result of the unique behavior and organization of their research and development divisions (R and D). R and D is given importance and works closely tied with production, resulting in a concentration of efforts that maximizes efficiency. Furthermore, the individuals concerned with R and D are frequently rotated to other areas in production and this complements the relationship with production operations. Although this setup works well, it is not geared towards basic research.

Globalization of R&D: recent changes in the management of innovation in transnational corporations
Article Abstract:
International business enterprises' R&D activities are increasingly resorting to consolidation and streamlining in the latter half of the 1990s. The geographically disperse locations of their R&D laboratories have become unwieldy in terms of coordinated management. Some companies have resorted to establishing multiple points of data garnering but with a single coordinating facility. Thus, while the firms continue to maintain their diverse R&D activities in different regions, they strive to centralize the control of these activities.
