Patents, licencing, and market structure in the chemical industry

Article Abstract:

How patenting, a pre-condition for technology licencing, affects market structure of the chemical industry is examined. Pre-war accounts show several market leaders using patents to facilitate technology transactions within cartels, preventing entry of non-cartels into new markets. However, the emergence of Specialized Engineering-Construction firms after World War II provided the growth and incentive for technology licencing. This later led to the development of chemical engineering which allows process innovations to be separated from product innovations.
