Police work, occupational stress and individual coping
Article Abstract:
A study of occupational stress and coping strategies among police officers which included the coping strategies of police officers' spouses was praised for broadening the focus of occupational stress research. However, the suggestion to include assessment of coping strategies and training for stress coping in police hiring decision was criticized because it implies that occupational stress is exclusively an employee problem. A better strategy would be to make police organizations less stressful.

Organizational exit pressures and role stress: impact on mental health
Article Abstract:
The relationship between social selection in and out of stressful situations and mental health is studied. A longitudinal survey involving 590 caregivers in mental institutions provided the data. An analysis of the responses showed that exit pressures or pressure to leave the situation affected somatization significantly. Combining this with role-ambiguity plus refusal to leave the setting enhances the negative impact on mental health.
