Preference motivations and libertarian dilemmas
Article Abstract:
The relationship between individual choice and ethics is analyzed in the context of welfare economics. The paradoxes enunciated by Sen and Gibbons emphasize the sometimes conflicting goals of preference motivation because of personal commitment and socially sanctioned choice. A salary choice problem is discussed to illustrate the difficulty of determining the divergence in ethical choice from subjective preference.
