Compostella Square: a master plan for transition
Article Abstract:
The Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA) is providing affordable housing for the residents of Compostella Square (Chesapeake, VA). When the CRHA acquired the 802 single-story attached units in Jul 1988, the area was characterized by several problems, including leaky roofs, broken windows, and drug dealing. The CRHA established several objectives, including creating a group of mini-neighborhoods to promote social interaction, developing a hierarchical street system, and discouraging vandalism by creating a sense of ownership. The CRHA has attempted to provide affordable, high-quality housing to the people who need it the most.

Ghost towns or downtowns? Saving the cities
Article Abstract:
The lack of a varied supply of housing in all price ranges is turning many American cities into ghost towns after work hours and on weekends. Although city living offers several advantages, including the accessibility of educational, health, entertainment, cultural, and other facilities, many reside outside the city because of the absence of attractive housing arrangements. Civic leaders and real estate developers who want to bring residents back to the cities must consider these three 'success factors' for any downtown residential development: architecture and design layouts, the surrounding neighborhood, and affordable rents.
