Restructuring medical care: where are the sociologists?
Article Abstract:
Sociologists are often ignored or not consulted by in the restructuring of the European medical care system. To make a relevant contribution to the current restructuring efforts, sociologists should engage in discussions regarding topics such as ideologically-driven political forces, the establishment of the European Community, the decline of the democratic left's influence and lack of impact of sociological research. Sociologists are also encouraged to discuss and evaluate policy issues such as privatization, medical productivity and primary care management.

Policy, praxis, and medical anthropology
Article Abstract:
A symposium on health policy and health praxis in the US was held. The event focused on issues and programs such as disease prevention, health promotion, medical education, treatment of chronic and life-threatening disease. The articles in the symposium illustrate the link between applied medical anthropology and health policy in the country. Medical anthropology can help in the search for alternatives to existing health policies and approaches.

Professionals, intellectuals, visible practitioners? The case of 'medical humanitarianism.'
Article Abstract:
Few studies have focused on the role played by doctors in social conflicts. The criticisms heaped upon the social and political influence of medicine in the 1960s and 1970s have not delved on doctors as citizens and their public commitments. A sociology that focuses on the role of medicine in modern society should learn from studies made by historians, which show how professional missions and political objectives overlap.
