Sexual backlash

Article Abstract:

Increasing hostile reactions against sexuality is an expression of a growing antagonism against women and endangers civil rights, divergent beliefs and gains achieved by the women's movement. Sexual hostility is propagated through the belief that traditional roles for women are better and the association of sex with sin and fear. SIECUS (Sex Information and Education Council of the US) is fighting sexual hostility, particularly education programs that promote fear and ignorance, by issuing guidelines on sexual education and helping those who are being put under those programs.

But does it work? Improving evaluations of sexuality education

Article Abstract:

Evaluations of sexuality education programs generally fail to take into account program goals such as teaching young people to communicate with their partners. They instead focus on evaluating the use of contraception, the postponement of sexual intercourse and the lowering of pregnancy rates. Sexuality education should make young people sexually responsible, enable them to form satisfying relationships, help them assess their own attitudes towards sex and give them information on sexuality. Good programs can clarify values and enhance communication between child and parent.

Toward a new paradigm on adolescent sexual health

Article Abstract:

Sexuality education must affirm young people's sexual nature and their right to make sexual decisions with focus on reducing unprotected intercourse. Negative consequences may arise out of unprotected intercourse, thus, education programs need to concentrate on reducing unprotected coitus either through the delay of sexual intercourse or the increase of contraceptive usage. In addition, it must be recognised that young people are capable of forming ethical and healthy sexual relationships which chronological age and marital status alone are unable to guarrantee.
