Technological innovation as a gateway to entry: the case of the telecommunications equipment industry
Article Abstract:
The concept of entry barriers in industrial organization literature is analyzed. Although innovation can be viewed as a barrier to entry in a particular industry, it can also be seen as a means of entering a changing industry if viewed from the point of the entrant as shown by data from the telecommunications equipment industry from 1975-1986. The analysis shows that assumptions regarding industrial organization are inapplicable to industries with fast paced technological changes.
