Technological threat and opportunity assessment
Article Abstract:
The concept of anticipating the technological future based on a structured approach that could be vital to technical decision-making is proposed. Further, a notion that is an effective framework for anticipating technological change is provided. This notion consists of two approaches: monitoring of technological developments in a rapidly changing global technological environment and considering any organization to be technologically-based to some or other degrees.

Implications of the dominant design in electronic initiation systems in the South African mining industry
Article Abstract:
The Utterback-Abernathy (UA) model shows that the evolution of emerging technology in the South African gold mining industry is yet to establish a dominant design. The emergence of a dominant design requires a reciprocal relationship between various market, social, economic and technological issues. Thus, managerial concern should be focused on factors that can affect the emergence of a dominant design such as strategic factors.

The death knells of mature technologies
Article Abstract:
The effectiveness of using S-curves as indicators of the demise of or waning of mature technologies was evaluated based on the manufacturing conditions in the wood products industry. The S-curves were applied to the analysis of the macroeconomic oscillatory behavior of plywood and oriented strand board/waferboard. Results indicate that curves can be used to accurately predict the demise of mature technologies.
