The abstinence-only initiative points to the need for evaluations
Article Abstract:
Sexuality education programs should be evaluated before being introduced on a national scale, with research suggesting that the US government's new $50 million-per-year abstinence-only programme will fail. Teenagers in the US are discouraged by government programs from learning about contraceptives, unlike in other countries where teenagers are educated and given access to contraceptives, says SIECUS CEO and President Debra Haffner, as part of the California Wellness advertising campaign. Rates of sexually transmitted diseases and teenage pregnancies are subsequently much lower in other countries.

Insight and information for more realistic media coverage
Article Abstract:
Popular media pays little serious attention to the various issues raised by sexuality. Frequent portrayal of consequence-free sexual behavior in American mass media adversely affects people's sexual beliefs and behavior. The health educators' role in creating a more responsible and realistic picture of sexuality in mass media has thus become important. Public information campaigns, media advocacy programs, and educational entertainment must be used as the principal vehicle to promote more realistic, medically accurate, and healthy ideas on sexuality.

Secrecy surrounding sexuality hinders STD-prevention programs
Article Abstract:
The Institute of Medicine report entitled 'The Hidden Epidemic: Confronting Sexually Transmitted Diseases' contains important information about sexually-transmitted diseases (STDs). It also presents a step-by-step strategy of solving problems about STDs which includes disseminating information about sexuality and promoting comprehensive sexuality education. The institute points out that lack of discussion about sexual health issues makes STDs a serious problem and recommends a National STD-Prevention System to solve the problem.
