The debate over physician-assisted suicide

Article Abstract:

The Supreme Court's assisted-suicide ruling in the Washington v. Glucksberg and Vacco v. Quill cases was the topic of a panel discussion at the ABA 1997 Annual Meeting in San Francisco. The constitutional right to suicide did exist but the issue was, for the most part, left to the states. The focus on pain took a narrow view of the problem. While pain is a problem for the terminally ill, dying with dignity and not ending up as a burden to their families can be greater worries.

How to use the Violence Against Women Act

Article Abstract:

The US Violence Against Women Act provides women who have been subject to gender-based violence with the opportunity to raise civil rights claims in a federal court. Damages can be sought for crimes of violence motivated by gender. The gender-motivation element will be difficult to prove, but statements and patterns of behavior are likely forms of evidence. Victims can receive injunctive or declaratory relief, or compensatory and punitive damages.
