The terminological shift from "Afro-American" to "African-American": is the field of Afro-American anthropology being redefined?
Article Abstract:
The terminological shift from 'Afro-American' to 'African-American' reflects the desire of those of African descent to be recognized for their cultural integrity and cultural maturity. However, such a terminological change will have an impact on cultural anthropological studies where the term Afro-American deals more with African-derived cultural behavior rather than phenotypical traits. Scholars should address this issue to distinguish between the two terms and minimize the confusion that may ensue, especially in the social sciences.
