The trial of Wang Juntao
Article Abstract:
Wang Juntao was sentenced to 13 years imprisonment following the 1989 Tienanmen Square massacre. Wang had been a democratic activist since he was in high school and was cofounder of the Beijing Social and Economic Sciences Research Institute. He was arrested after hiding for four months and held without charge for 13 months, a violation of Chinese law. He was charged with sedition and counterrevolutionary propaganda and incitement. His defense attorneys were harassed and Wang has been denied rights to legal redress. American Bar associations have written letters to the Chinese government on his behalf.

Should we have a permanent international criminal court? As Serbs and Croats come to trial, the success of the tribunal is key
Article Abstract:
Permanent establishment of an international criminal tribunal will force the international community to confront different interpretations of human rights as well as sovereignty issues. The UN International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia is seen as a test of whether crimes can be prosecuted at the international level. This court and any subsequent permanent court has to confront funding problems, exacerbated by the need to reach witnesses in many nations. The Yugoslavian court has also had to consider whether criminals should be granted amnesty to further peace.
