The voice of dead men: interview with Sister Helen Prejean
Article Abstract:
Sister Helen Prejean's book and the movie based on it, 'Dead Man Walking,' have drawn nationwide attention to a side of capital punishment rarely considered: the perspective and suffering of those on death row. A nun who works regularly with those sentenced to death, she regards the death penalty as unjust and wrong, a reflection of a society that regards some lives as more sacred than others. She calls justice 'a euphemism for revenge,' and points to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights of the United Nations.
