Three attempts at "de-Wintelization" Japan's TRON project, the US government's suits against Wintel, and the entry of Java and Linux

Article Abstract:

The three attempts, JapanEs TRON project, US Department of Justice against Microsoft and Intel, and the entry of OS Linux, which challenge the dominance of Wintel, are discussed. The interrelated issues which includes path-dependent nature of innovation, especially that due to network externalities, the balance between property rights and the relevance of government intervention in promoting innovation are examined.
