A Survey of Color Graphics Printing
Article Abstract:
As color computer terminals become more available, the demand for color graphics printers increases, and there are many new technologies to meet that demand. Because of improvements in mechanisms, ink, and media formulations, printers are producing better images at lower prices. Problems in paper-advancing mechanisms and poor tone gradation still must be solved. Emerging technologies include film printers which produce prints of photographic quality from color graphics terminals. Dot-matrix impact color printers transfer color dots of ink using printhead hammers. Xerox is the only manufacturer of an electrographic color printer. Electrostatic printing has carried over from monochrome graphics reproduction. Thermal transfer color printers are beginning to become more popular. Ink-jet printers are close to becoming the most popular technology for color graphics printing. Pen plotters are the oldest technology and are still the most commonly used. Illustrations show all of the color graphics technologies and examples of what they produce. Tables list available color printers and a comparison of their print quality. A block diagram illustrates the process an image takes in the course of being printed.
