Trading Gray for blue

Article Abstract:

The confederate prisoners were offered a deal to serve the Union army on the Western front instead of staying in prison in the American Civil War and they formed the First US Volunteer Infantry Regiment. They held the upper Missouri for the Union and their adventures in the Upper plains demonstrated that Northerners and Southerners could live peacefully and work toward common goals, and provide a vivid picture of the rebirth of US after the Civil War.
