A preliminary report on ego development in nonoffending mothers of sexually abused children

Article Abstract:

A study tries to draw similarities in the levels of ego development of mothers with sexually abused children. A total of 21 mothers with sexually abused children were asked to answer Loevinger and Wessler's Washington University Sentence Completion Test. Results of the test suggest further empirical research work on the same population group. Additional research efforts may prove invaluable in improving the present approaches to treatment and providing mental health professionals with a deeper perspective of mothers' traumatic experiences.

The helping alliance in work with families where children have been abused or neglected

Article Abstract:

The quality of helping alliance between professionals and patients is important in assisting families where child abuse has occurred. A study by Martha Morrison Dore, published in this issue, point out that there is a need to contextualize approaches being used in forming helping alliance especially regarding high risk families. Another study by James M. Gaudin, Jr., et al., also published in this issue, focused on neglectful families. Both studies show that establishing helping alliance requires assessment of the whole situation.

Editorial: therapeutic treatment for physically abused children

Article Abstract:

Several studies have shown that child abuse can lead to psychological trauma later in life. Unfortunately, not much attention is given to the treatment of physically abused children. Psychotherapy for child abuse often focuses on the family and the treatment of the adults' psychological problems rather than on the emotional and psychological difficulties of the victims. Further studies are recommended on the individual therapy and counseling offered to abused children.
