Abstinence and birth control among rural adolescents in impoverished families: a test of theoretical discriminators
Article Abstract:
A study investigated the socio-demographic and theoretical factors that discriminate between 357 adolescents in families receiving subsidies under the Aid to Families with Dependent Children program who have not had sexual intercourse, who always use birth control and who do not use birth control. The study was conducted in 10 rural Arkansas counties. Bivariate analysis suggested that all of the experimental factors, with one marginal exception, exhibited significant variance between the three adolescent groups.

Testing a theoretical model of adolescent sexual behavior among rural families in poverty
Article Abstract:
Elements of social control, social learning and strain theories are capable of predicting measures of sexual behavior among poor rural adolescents. An integrated theoretical model fits these measures of sexual behavior. The frequency of sexual intercourse and the number of sexual partners in one year, along with the number of lifetime sex partners, are the measures of sexual behavior. Age, gender and rationalizations directly influence the sexual behavior of the adolescents.
