'China Beach' and 'Tour of Duty:' American television and revisionist history of the Vietnam war

Article Abstract:

The television series 'Tour of Duty' and 'China Beach' help Americans understand the difficult choices Vietnam veterans had to make during the war. 'Tour of Duty' portrays American troops directly involved in the conflict while 'China Beach' focuses on the professionals who dealt with the dead and the injured. By personifying veterans, the series tackle the problems of readjustment, depression, withdrawal from family and friends, drug and alcohol use and the high rate of suicide among veterans. The shows reflect America's reawakened interest in the Vietnam conflict.

DuMont: the original fourth television network

Article Abstract:

Allen B. DuMont was one of the pioneers of the big television networks, which began operating in the 1930s. His organization was the first to broadcast a commercial network program. DuMont began to offer a full evening's program by 1948 and advertising revenue rose rapidly, but this success was short lived. The DuMont Television Network ended in 1955 due to cutbacks in production and a freeze on license approvals. A restructured DuMont Broadcasting Corp sold off its stations in 1959.
