Chinese communal support networks

Article Abstract:

The social support networks of Chinese working mothers in a Beijing, China neighborhood were analyzed. The primary method used to collect data was in-depth interviews with 27 working mothers. Based on the analysis of the data, the networks had several key features that included mutual sharing of pooled resources, reciprocity throughout life, aspirations of harmony within the network and a boundary between insiders and outsiders. The network's characteristics stand in contrast to Western networks which are egocentric in nature.
