Clarifying divergent estimates of rape from two national surveys
Article Abstract:
Reports on the volume of rape in the US vary significantly. To prevent the erosion of public confidence in social statistics, an understanding of this variation must be undertaken. Two ostensibly similar surveys, namely, the National Crime Victimization Survey and the National Women's Study, were studied to explore diverging estimates on the level of rape. Results show that, although they looked ostensibly similar, a thorough analysis of the two surveys showed that they were actually different in design and other aspects, accounting for their differing estimates on the level of rape.

Filter questions and question interpretation: presuppositions at work
Article Abstract:
A research was conducted to verify whether filter questions affect respondents' interpretations of research questions. The research methodology involved the comparison of self-administered questionnaire answers and direct questioning answers among 92 University of Michigan undergraduates. It was found that filter questions convey presuppositions that may alter respondents' understanding of the question. In addition, the length of the reference period used may also affect question interpretation and that social desirability may also contribute to the filter-question effect.
