Clinical practice: treating the non-voluntary client
Article Abstract:
Agencies often treat non-voluntary clients on condition that the clients acknowledge their problems the way these problems are defined by others. They can also use legal authority to ascertain cooperation from a non-voluntary client by threatening to turn the case over to the court. This sort of non-voluntary situation negates the need for an intervention based trust and recognition approach. Practitioners can combine therapeutic work with social control in treating non-voluntary clients. However, there is a need to develop specific models of intervention.
