Comparing clinical and lay accounts of the diagnosis and treatment of back pain

Article Abstract:

Taking the example of two case studies, an analysis on the clinician-patient relationship, patient-centered care and concordance focusing on patients and health care professionals is presented. The two case studied pertain to patients treated for back pain, one of them having a concordant relationship, and the other having both concordant and discordant relationship with healthcare professionals.

A tale of treatment: tuberculosis control of a low income neighborhood in the United States

Article Abstract:

This article examines the treatment of the impoverished ill, focusing on a homeless tuberculosis patient who was placed on directly observed therapy. The author, analyzing the notes of a Chicago public health worker, argues that even culturally sensitive and individualized health care cannot overcome the negative health effects of poverty and social inequality.

Neighborhood correlates of homicide trends: an analysis using growth-curve modeling

Article Abstract:

The ideas and concepts from social disorganization theory with recent development in growth-curve methodology are blended to examine the association between neighborhood structure and homicide levels over time. The findings from show that the initial levels and trends in each homicide subtype vary across neighborhood.
