Research indicates that HIV patients have a more negative body image than those who have not tested positive for HIV, but have a greater desire for physical touch than their non-HIV counterparts. The article focuses on the psychological link between perceived contamination and deprivation of touch, with touch often being seen as synonymous with comfort and social acceptance.

Love and intimacy are the key factors in relationship survival, with unprotected sex signalling the intimate, secure relationship.
