Contours of the middle class in the provinces of Russia: Theoretical approaches to the study of the middle class

Article Abstract:

A comparative study of seven different communities of the working class and the middle class from villages and cities is undertaken for determining the criteria that design the basic forms of the provincial middle class. Research data indicate that a social class, which can be identified as middle class is developing and is successfully adapting to the new society arising out of the country's transition to the market economy.

How people feel about work

Article Abstract:

This article discusses work attitudes among 1,700 Russians who participated in a questionnaire survey. The author, analyzing data provided by self-employed persons, managers, and low skilled workers, found that managers had better attitudes toward work and were motivated to succeed, whereas the self-employed and low-skilled workers viewed work only as a means to make money.

The subjective middle class: income, material situation, and value orientations

Article Abstract:

This article examines the rise of the middle class in Russia. The author discusses the attitudes of those who consider themselves middle class and analyzes housing conditions, savings, and vacations, arguing their lifestyle does not vary much from the lower classes, suggesting a true middle class has yet to emerge in Russia.
