David Riesman's classical sociological work 'The Lonely Crowd' is discussed in relation to the influence of the critical theory of Erich Fromm. Topics include theories of mass society from Nazism to suburbia, capitalism and the Reformation in Fromm, American capitalism and the marketing character, Riesman meets Fromm, 'The Lonely Crowd' revisited, psyche and social criticism, research and theory in Riesman's 'Faces in the Crowd' (1952), and Riesman's decline in relation to sociology as social criticism.

A Canadian rejoinder: Sociology north and south of the border
Article Abstract:
The rejoinder dialogues with some of the perspectives offered on the discipline north of the border with an eye towards lessons that American sociologists might learn from the Canadian experience in response to the American sociologist special issue on Canadian Sociology is described. A critique is offered of the 'origin myth' of Canadian sociology as a particularly vibrant 'critical sociology', with discussion of Dorothy Smith's influence on sociology in Canada.

Why sociology does not need to be saved: Analytic reflections on public sociologies
Article Abstract:
An answer to the call for saving sociology and an assessment of the former American Sociological Association (ASA) president's speech ' For Public Sociology' is presented after examining the debate about public sociologies in the ASA .The results suggest that research should be carried out which would lead to professional, critical, public and policy sociologies working together for larger disciplinary work and for society's improvement and well-being.
