Development of a screening questionnaire for tobacco/nicotine dependence according to ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV

Article Abstract:

A screening questionnaire for tobacco/nicotine dependence has been developed, according to ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV. The Tobacco Dependence Screener (TDS) was used in a study to determine its internal reliability and predictive validity in three samples of smokers in Japan. The findings support a previous study reporting a poor concordance between the DSM-III diagnosis and the Fagerstrom Tolerance Questionnaire (FTQ), although the TDS and the FTQ showed moderate correlation. It is concluded that the TDS showed an acceptable level of scale reliability and a high screening performance when using the ICD-10, DSM-III-R and DSM-IV as a standard.

Intention to stop smoking among Norwegian smokers: The role of nicotine dependence, type of cigarettes, and age at onset of daily smoking

Article Abstract:

Data of psychological nicotine dependence in Norwegian daily smokers was assessed, and nicotine dependence was found to be higher in smokers of hand-rolled cigarettes than those smoking manufactured cigarettes. Dependence also rose as the starting age of daily smoking fell, and dependence was higher in those of low education compared to those of higher education.
