Dose-effect relationship between overdose mortality and prescribed methadone dosage in low-threshold maintenance programs

Article Abstract:

Methadone programmes play a valuable role in reducing overdose mortality, according to research undertaken as part of the Amsterdam Cohort Study among drug users. Attention focused on whether prescription of methadone in low-threshold programmes is linked with lower all-cause and overdose mortality. No evidence was found of methadone programmes being effective in reducing all-cause mortality. It was established that high dosages of methadone may be justified to ensure optimal risk reduction.

Craving patterns in methadone maintenance treatment with dextromoramide as adjuvant

Article Abstract:

The effect on opiate craving amongst long term opiate-dependent subjects in methadone maintenance treatment was assessed. A clear drug-effect link between the increment of dextromoramide plasma concentration and decrement of opiate craving was expected. A craving increase prior to drug administration was observed in three cases, and the results suggest beneficial effects of short-acting opiate on diminishing craving in opiate addicts.

Contingency management for tobacco smoking in methadone-maintained opiate addicts

Article Abstract:

Contingency management (CM), given to 17 methadone-maintained cigarette smokers for abstinence shows positive results, indicating a link between smoking abstinence and reduced cocaine use. The findings imply that patients benefit from the CM program and longer abstinence from smoking also means lesser use of cocaine. The results also support the theory of a link between reduction in tobacco smoking and reduction in cocaine use.
