Economic and social development in Hong Kong and Southern China: implications for social work

Article Abstract:

There is a need for an integrated development strategy to overcome the problem of distorted development in Hong Kong and China. Development experience, both in Hong Kong and China, shows that economic growth has not solved social problems. The integrated development strategy, as exemplified by Guangdong Provincial State Farm, to promote rapid economic growth with distributive justice, can be used by other third world countries to ensure social and economic development. Social workers can engage in the developmental process to ensure a harmonious and balanced development.

Involving social work in economic development

Article Abstract:

Efforts are being made to adopt a developmental approach in social work which will promote economic development and social welfare. Social work has previously used a remedial approach and this is contrary to the profession's commitment to social and economic development. There have been attempts to identify developmental roles for social work in the literature despite the theory's abstract nature. There are many ways in which social work can contribute to economic development.

Micro-enterprise as an approach for promoting economic development in social work: lessons from the Self-Employment Investment Demonstration

Article Abstract:

Social workers can make important contributions to the economic development of a country by promoting micro-economic enterprises amongst their clients. Micro-enterprise development amongst the poor in the United States offers social workers an opportunity to help the poor, needy clients and end their dependency on state assistance. This makes the clients independent and productive and allows them to contribute to economic development.
