Emotional impact of the medical examination for child sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

The research agenda in investigating the emotional effect of child sexual abuse medical examination are discussed. It is presumed that the examination contributes to the long term emotional trauma of the victim. There are four categories of the examination's emotional impact, namely, pre-existing medical and psychosocial variables, medical setting and influencing emotional response, quantification of negative and positive outcomes, and relationship of the emotional response to psychosocial coping skills. The primary barrier of the research is inadequate resource funds.

Emotional impact of the child sexual abuse medical examination

Article Abstract:

A panel discussion concerning the issue of emotional trauma development associated with child sexual abuse medical examination is presented. Children experiencing emotional stress during examination are likely to cope better than children whose abuse is not reported. Mental health evaluations of victims are required whenever they dissociate in the course of the medical evaluations. Additional research should also be conducted on the accompanying parent's emotional status prior and after the medical evaluation.

Children's responses to the medical evaluation for child sexual abuse

Article Abstract:

The reactions of children to medical screening and prevention of emotional trauma resulting from the examination are the issues that must be addressed in the research about child abuse investigation. Professionals involved in the field of examination should devise interventions that would minimize the emotional trauma associated with the evaluation. The manner by which the child responds to the examination may be used as a screening tool in determining the necessity of a mental health evaluation.
