Factors influencing custody decisions in contested adoption cases
Article Abstract:
Courts have sometimes been asked to determine whether an unwed father should be granted custody of his child when the mother intentionally neglects to inform him of the child's birth or of her plan to place the child for adoption. Three bivariate independent variables were used from which eight vignettes were developed indicating scenarios patterned from actual court cases. The study was performed to determine if the significance of the factors varies with circumstance and to find out their relationship to factors used in judicial decisions. Findings showed that the particular circumstances and the subject's gender have substantial influences on custody decisions.
