Foreign direct investment in developing countries
Article Abstract:
Foreign direct investment (FDI) is clearly an impetus for economic development, especially in developing countries, owing to the technology, management know-how and access to export markets that it invariably brings. From an annual average of $12.6 billion in 1980-85, FDI to developing nations climbed to $51.8 billion in 1992-93 and rose further to $70 billion in 1994. Some countries, however, still fail to attract FDI, despite economic reforms. Factors explaining their failure to do so include inadequate legal protection as well as investment promotion, currency overvaluation, trade barriers and tax distortions.
