Friendly advice? Beauty messages in web sites of teen magazines

Article Abstract:

The use of youth-targeted language, combined with offers of expert advice in the management of beauty problems suggested that web sites of teen magazines wish to present themselves as friends rather than marketers. Their sites play an important role in a private, personalized and interactive setting in reinforcing the messages concerning the centrality of female beauty in Western societies.

Periodicals aimed at a female Hispanic American audience perform pluralistic as well as assimilative functions. Since many Latin American as well as Hispanic women read these magazines, they attempt to create a pan-Hispanic identity.
