From welfare state to cultural turn: Swedish sociology

Article Abstract:

The works of sociologists Ron Eyerman, Andrew Jamison, Goran Therborn and Diana Mullinari are all aimed at at expanding the boundaries of Swedish sociology. Eyerman and Jamison stress the relationship of culture and politics while Therborn emphasizes the processes that affect European society during a particular period. On the other hand, Mulinari combines the ethnography with a feminist perspective. Their works have different concepts and methodologies but all are trying to go beyond the demarcation line that traditional discipline has set. Their works also offer a distinctive point of view to reinforce the sociological vision of Swedish society.

From sex roles to gendered institutions

Article Abstract:

The term 'gendered institutions' has become part of the language of social science due to the presence of gender in the various sectors of social life. The term evolved from the usage of gender as a basic principle of social structure and cultural interpretion. In the process of conceptualization, gender has come to connote the segentation of human activities, practices and social structures interms of differentiations between men and women. Thus, 'gendered institutions' are those institutional structures of the US and other societies organized based on gender.

Dismantling the "gendered family": breadwinning, gender, and the family values debate

Article Abstract:

Jean Potuchek's book 'Who Supports the Family?,' discusses the findings of a study examining the emergence of dual-earner families and its impact on conceptions of breadwinning. It highlights the transforming relationship between gender and breadwinning, and how the dismantling of the link between them may result in gender equality in families. The discussion of breadwinning provides a glimpse into how gender boundaries and conceptions of gender difference are created in marriage.
