Functional and affordable furnishings

Article Abstract:

Simple furnishing prototypes that use cheap materials can be employed to improve the living conditions in public housing. This was evident in the family migrant centers that house migrant farmworkers in San Joaquin County, CA. Housing authority chief Antonio Pizano partnered with researchers at the University of California's Dept of Environmental Design with the aim of developing inexpensive furnishings that would infuse the apartments with a home-like ambience and unique character. The researchers successfully designed closets, storage units, tables and bed that addressed such considerations as affordability, residential character and family personalization and differentiation. The prototype designs used in these centers can also be used in low-income housing developments.
