Harm reduction: come as you are

Article Abstract:

Harm reduction is fast becoming a key approach in controlling addictive behavior. It pertains to a practical yet compassionate set of techniques aimed at minimizing the harmful consequences of addictive behavior for both the patient and their communities. The concept of harm reduction assumes that it is an alternative to the moral/criminal and disease models of addiction and that it espouses addict advocacy. It also recognizes that abstinence is an ideal outcome, but also accepts alternatives that may reduce harm. It also promotes a low-threshold access to services as an alternative to high-threshold approaches.
