Immigrants' impacts on U.S. society

Article Abstract:

Increased diversity as a result of both legal and illegal immigration exerts a strong influence on many aspects of US society. In education, the presence of young students with limited skills in English necessitates the hiring of bilingual teachers and additional counselors to help immigrant children and their families. Case studies indicate that the presence of immigrants influences wages, working conditions and employment levels in specific communities, although this is not supported by econometric studies. Immigrants also represent an added burden for government budgets.

When should immigrants receive public benefits?

Article Abstract:

Congress is planning to pass the Personal Responsibility Act that limits immigrants' access to Supplemental Security Income, Medicaid food stamps and other social services and imposes the provision of support on the immigrant's sponsor. Perhaps a more humane proposal should consider immigrants' needs for assistance during their transition into productive citizens in terms of skills training and integration. In addition, the sponsor will be asked to sign an affidavit allowing an immigrant to receive support to be deducted in the future from the sponsor's own income.

Immigrants may lose benefits

Article Abstract:

Immigration and welfare plans authored by Republicans may soon find a large number of US legal immigrants without federal support. As part of the Republican campaign to reduce federal budget, a number of welfare policies which would affect even Medicare and Medicaid are being debated on the floor. Even naturalized American citizens for less than five years are not spared from the measures. However, some legislators have started to question the legality of the measure as they believe it is unconstitutional to discriminate against naturalized citizens.
