Improving the responses of physicians to elder abuse and neglect: contributions of a model program

Article Abstract:

Physicians are in the best position to detect abuse and neglect of elderly persons. However, previous studies revealed that physicians do not take action at signs of elder maltreatment. The apparent lack of concern may be attributed to factors such as inadequate medical school training and ignorance of laws obliging them to report such cases. A training-service program was devised by the Southeast Multi-Service Center and the Geriatric Unit of the Indiana University Department of General Internal Medicine to meet the needs of elderly patients.
