Interpreting media reviews

Article Abstract:

Arlie Russel Hochschild's book, 'The Time Bind: When Work Becomes Home and Home Becomes Work,' received so much media attention that it was reviewed in more than 70 newspapers and magazines. Media's attraction to the book may be attributed to its central thesis of work and family life, Hochschild's engaging personality and her determination to use the media to spread her views. However, media has failed to interpret Hochschild's book from a sociological perspective. Reviewers tend to treat her case materials as talks about people and not the social processes.

On book exhibits and new complexities: reflections on sociology as science

Article Abstract:

The array of new books on sociology dismays sociologists who are concerned about not being able to read all the books. It also brings to memory the golden age of sociology when teachers read only Parsons and not much else. However, that vision of sociology's golden years is over with changing time and space. Instead of feeling pessimism over the deluge of new books, sociologists should hope that the intellectual diversity within sociology would result in a different type of excellence.

Best-sellers by sociologists: an exploratory study

Article Abstract:

The sales figures for the 53 books by sociologists that have sold over 50,000 copies are presented. The figures were obtained by asking editors at large commercial and university presses and sociologist-authors through mail questionnaires sent to them. The best-selling list includes 'The Lonely Crowd' by D. Riesman, N. Glazer and R. Denney, which had sold 1,434,000 copies by 1995. Hypotheses on the kinds of sociological books that are bought by the general public are given.
