Just-in-space: Certified rural products, labor of quality, and regulatory spaces

Article Abstract:

The number and diversity of 'quality-certified' products has increased dramatically and hence an examination is conducted on labor practices and regulatory spaces within third party quality certification, suggesting that this distinct configuration be termed as 'just-in-space' production. While this configuration facilitates public action in support of social-justice and environmental conservation, it is also susceptible to manipulation by large retain firms, who set up private certifications.

Certified organic agriculture in Mexico: Market connections and certification practices in large and small producers

Article Abstract:

Large and small producers in Mexico's organic agriculture sector were examined, based on a diagnostic census of Mexican organic agriculture. While organic and fair trade agriculture is touted as an income-generating production strategy for small producers of the global south, the study suggests that Mexican organic agriculture reproduces existing social inequalities between large and small producers in conventional Mexican agriculture.

Smallholder participation and certification of organic farm products in Mexico

Article Abstract:

Standards applied to certify smallholder production systems tend to be developed with regard to first-world consumer interests and imposed in a top-down fashion by certification agencies and intermediaries with little or no farmer participation. Organic farming and certification in Mexico in the past few years is described and three emerging trends are discussed, including the advent of contract agriculture in organic production.
