Longitudinal patterns of tobacco smoking from childhood to middle age
Article Abstract:
The natural development of tobacco smoking from preadolescence to adulthood in a longitudinal cohort has been studied, with regard to age-to-age stability of consumption and the determination of typical individual developmental patterns. Light smoking was found to be common in the younger years but was rare in adulthood. The chosen cluster solution represented nearly 90% of the error sum of squares, and the most common pattern described nonsmokers, while the remaining typical patterns described smoking, with three involving intense smoking over several years.

Seasons and depression: the influence of cigarette smoking
Article Abstract:
Cigarette smoking among patients with depression leads to seasonal variations in hospital admission rates. Admission rates of depressed smokers peaks during spring time, and declines in summer. There is a lack of such seasonal rhythm among depressed nonsmokers, and smokers and nonsmokers in other psychiatric groups. Findings indicate that for depressed patients, both nicotine dependence and seasonal variations are potential risk factors. The relationship between depression and cigarette smoking, and its implications are discussed.
