Measuring drug urges by questionnaire: do not balance scales

Article Abstract:

The Questionnaire of Smoking Urges uses 19 positively worded and 13 negatively worded items to assess the smoking urges among individuals but balancing the scales can lead to misinterpretation of the survey's results. The response of smokers to 32 positively worded statements were paired with the negatively worded counterparts. The mean scoring of the negative statements is higher than that of the positive statements. The items are based on the concepts of the desire to smoke, the expectation of positive result, relief of withdrawal or negative affect, and the intention to continue smoking.

The impact of behavior and addiction on psychological models of cigarette and alcohol use during pregnancy

Article Abstract:

Past addictive behaviors influence pregnant women's smoking habits more strongly than their alcohol consumption, while psychological factors influence alcohol use among nonsmokers. Past drinking behavior is unrelated to alcohol use during pregnancy among non-smokers. Self-efficacy regarding the ability to refrain from addictive behaviors during pregnancy, and beliefs about the consequences of these addictions, predict alcohol use among both smokers and non-smokers during pregnancy. However, these variables fail to influence cigarette use during the later stages of pregnancy.
