Medicating the self: the roles of science and culture in the construction of Prozac

Article Abstract:

Many users of the antidepressant drug Prozac perceive it as being capable of changing their identity and personality, with the biological and psychological aspects of the self having grown difficult to separate. Society apparently prefers the kind of temperament facilitated through the use of Prozac, such as helping users to become more extrovert. Psychopharmacologist Peter Kramer believes patients are diagnosed in terms of the available medications, with ideology largely shaped by contemporary technology. Author Elizabeth Wurtzel examines the cultural aspects of Prozac in 'Prozac Nation.'

Canada Lee: black actor in non-traditional roles

Article Abstract:

The expansion of opportunities for black actors in theater production is partially due to Canada Lee. A former boxer, Lee had his theater debut as Banquo in the Orson Welles-directed all black production of 'Macbeth' in 1936. He played many non-traditional roles, including Victor Mason in the 1940 'Big White Fog' and Bosola in 'The Duchess of Malfi' in 1946. Lee viewed the theater as an extension of America and became involved in politics. His subsequent blacklisting late in his career cost him his health. Lee died penniless in 1952.
