The assimilation crisis

Article Abstract:

The issue of assimilation takes on increasing importance as immigrants continue to arrive mostly from Asia and Latin America. Pres Clinton himself acknowledged that the US faces a formidable challenge in successfully assimilating these immigrants into the American culture and has denounced as 'un-American' efforts to diminish their cultural and economic influence. Conflicts are bound to arise if these immigrants remain as subcultures, whereas cultural pluralism provides opportunities for cultural development and acceptance of ethnic differences and similarities.

Population growth, immigration, and the national interest

Article Abstract:

World population is expected to reach 10 billion in 2050 with 97% of this figure belonging to third world countries. These figures economically translate to more poor people, greater numbers of migrants and dangerous shortages on world reserves of basic resources. International migration numbers, especially, have been increasing despite migration quotas being raised by host countries. Taking the cue from the statistical reports, concerned host countries are now finding ways and means to check and regulate the migrant flow.
