Sexual abuse and body image distortion

Article Abstract:

A research study attempts to establish a relationship between the causes of sexual abuse and body image distortion in women without eating disorders but who may have unhealthy eating habits. Volunteer female undergraduates totalling 100 were measured for body size via calipers, and were asked to answer a questionnaire on sexual events. The results, which support the Waller-Hamilton-Rose-Sumra-Baldwin findings, show that women who reported being abused at a later age and had unhealthy eating habits exhibited increased body size overestimation.

Discovering physical abuse: insights from a follow-up study of delinquents

Article Abstract:

Incarcerated youth delinquents from Connecticut were extensively interviewed regarding the abuses they experienced as children. Open-ended questions and semi-structured interviews were used by skilled interviewers to elicit detailed information not obtained from past interviews. The seemingly casual and impersonal questions were in fact highly scripted and successful in eliciting information. Interview strategies to overcome subject conflicts that underlie abuse denial and concealment were discussed.
