Negotatiating the role of expert carers on an adult hospital ward

Article Abstract:

Issues are discussed regarding the challenge posed by the established family caregiver to the social organization of hospital nurses' work. This challenge applies to the nurses' control over caregiving duties, their claim to expertise and their license to define the standards of care.

Accommodating health and social care needs: routine resource allocation in stroke rehabilitation

An ethnographic approach is used to analyze resource allocation in social and health care services, using a sample of adult stroke patients. Discussion focuses on how front-line staff accommodated patient needs and the impact on equity, equality, and quality of service provision.

Understanding complex trajectories in health and social care provision

The article examines the links between individual care trajectories and wider social and health care systems, and develops a framework for better comprehension of these links. Cases used for illustration involve ethnographic studies of stroke patients undergoing rehabilitation.
