Negotiating the constraints of gender binarism: intersexuals' challenge to gender categorization

Article Abstract:

Intersexuality or hermaphroditism is discussed as an emerging gender category in relation to gender binarism and social categorization. Topics include gender norms, methods and findings of a study of intersexuals, their experiences of being an object of medical study, the importance of external validation, efforts to destigmatize intersexuality, and newly emerging intersex identities.

The study of the social sciences in developing societies: towards an adequate conceptualization of relevance

The concepts of relevance and irrelevance are crucial to social science research. Relevant social science informs people subordinated by caste, age, gender, ethnicity, class and profession full knowledge of their contribution to society, while irrelevant research lacks originality, has little or no practical application, is redundant and mediocre.

Life course: innovations and challenges for social research

Article Abstract:

Contemporary life-course analysis investigates whether biographies are less relevant than negotiations between opportunities, social networks, individuals and opportunities. Linking mechanisms, institutional arrangements, and structuration, especially focusing on gender and age, have emerged as methodologies for life-course analysis.
